Don\u2019t bet on it<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">By next Friday,\u00a0and possibly sooner,\u00a0Britain will have its third Prime Minister so far in 2022 \u2014\u00a0its fifth since the Brexit vote in 2016 \u2014\u00a0and still no certainty that its unprecedented political crisis is on its way to being resolved<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><q>Whatever happens, it&#8217;s a mess,<\/q>\u00a0said pollster Joe Twyman of Deltapoll.\u00a0<q>It&#8217;s very difficult to see how a [Conservative] Party as divided and fractious as this can unite behind one candidate<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Liz Truss&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/britain-truss-pm-1.6622900\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dramatic resignation as Prime Minister\u00a0(new window)<\/a>\u00a0Thursday \u2014\u00a0just 44 days after winning the leadership \u2014\u00a0makes her the shortest serving PM\u00a0in British history.\u00a0And the just-beginning leadership race\u00a0that&#8217;s set to pick a successor in just seven days,\u00a0will also make this the fastest turnover of power the country has ever witnessed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LIZ TRUSS ANNOUNCES RESIGNATION<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">8 hours agoDuration1:36Saying &#8216;I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party,&#8217; British Prime Minister Liz Truss says she is stepping down just six weeks after taking office<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><q>We can&#8217;t have a revolving door of chaos,<\/q>\u00a0said opposition leader Keir Starmer,\u00a0whose Labour Party weighed in with a 36 point lead over the Conservatives in a recent poll,\u00a0the biggest gap recorded in almost thirty years\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><q>This isn&#8217;t a soap opera at the top of the Tory party \u2014\u00a0it&#8217;s doing huge damage to our economy and the reputation of our country,<\/q>\u00a0he said<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Starmer and other opposition MPs are demanding an immediate\u00a0general election, which would, in all likelihood, lead to a Conservative decimation,\u00a0and so the Tories will forge ahead with yet another leadership contest<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Unless called earlier, the next general election is not set to take place until January 2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><q>This is the last chance saloon for the Conservative Party,<\/q>\u00a0said Catherine Haddon, a senior fellow at London&#8217;s Institute for Government<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><q>Unless you can actually bring your party together, get votes through Parliament, and be able to have a functioning government,\u00a0you&#8217;re not showing you can govern. And if you can&#8217;t do that,\u00a0the only option is a general election<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Britain deserves better than this revolving door of Tory chaos.<br><br>The British people are paying the price for 12 years of failure.<br><br>It&#39;s time for a general election and a Labour government. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ej65XFNfVQ\">pic.twitter.com\/Ej65XFNfVQ<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Keir Starmer (@Keir_Starmer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Keir_Starmer\/status\/1583114386004058112?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 20, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Truss&#8217;s budget woes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">It was only a few weeks ago that a campaigning Truss promised party members\u00a0policies that would tame soaring inflation.\u00a0She vowed to slash taxes for the wealthy and promised relief from sky-high energy bills<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">But financial markets hated the debt-laden budget crafted by Truss and her former Chancellor of the Exchequer, or finance minister, Kwasi Kwarteng\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">It sent the pound plummeting and\u00a0mortgage rates soaring. The health of public pension plans were suddenly in jeopardy, prompting a momentous intervention of bond buying from the Bank of England in an attempt to head off a full blown economic meltdown\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Last week, Truss fired Kwarteng and tried to right the ship with a new finance minister, Jeremy Hunt.\u00a0He reversed almost every one of the controversial budget measures,\u00a0but Truss&#8217;s death spiral only intensified<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Rishi Sunak, the\u00a0former finance minister whose resignation played a role in the downfall of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, finished second to Truss in the most recent leadership contest and is the bookmakers favourite<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Supporters say he&#8217;s interested, but he hasn&#8217;t tipped his hand<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">There&#8217;s also Penny Mordaunt, leader of the House of Commons and a member of Truss&#8217;s cabinet.\u00a0She finished just behind Sunak in this summer&#8217;s leadership race and\u00a0could be a compromise candidate<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;IT&#8217;S A MESS,&#8217; SAYS POLITICAL ANALYST OF BRITISH CONSERVATIVE PARTY<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">6 hours agoDuration5:41Despite the resignation of British Prime Minister Liz Truss, it&#8217;s difficult to see how any successor could unite the Conservative Party, appeal to the electorate and steer the U.K. through its current economic turmoil, says pollster and political analyst Joe Twyman<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">?Could Boris bounce back<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">But by far the most intriguing scenario would see Johnson himself attempt an act of political resurrection and try to get his old job back<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">When he spoke for the last time outside\u00a010 Downing Street in early September,\u00a0using typical Boris Johnson metaphors,\u00a0he described his tenure as PM as being like a\u00a0<q>booster rocket<\/q>\u00a0that had done its part and was now falling back to Earth, its fuel spent<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">But that hasn&#8217;t stopped his longtime allies from quickly raising his name as a possible successor to Truss<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><q>If Liz Truss is no longer PM there can be no coronation of previously failed candidates.\u00a0MPs must demand the return of @BorisJohnson,<\/q>\u00a0tweeted Nadine Dorries,\u00a0a former cabinet minister under Johnson<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Other Conservative MPs were effusive before the TV cameras<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><q>I know he&#8217;s on holiday with his family,\u00a0but if he&#8217;s listening there&#8217;s certainly a lot of support and I&#8217;d urge him to put his name forward,<\/q>\u00a0Conservative MP Brendan Clark-Smith told the BBC<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">While a Johnson comeback can&#8217;t be ruled out,\u00a0detractors\u00a0are already saying it would lead to resignations<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">MP John Baron told BBC&#8217;s Radio 4 it would be\u00a0<q>impossible<\/q>\u00a0to serve with Johnson as leader again \u2014\u00a0and other veteran political watchers also see it as unlikely<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-left is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><q>Many of the mistakes that led to him resigning in the first place are a result of his personality flaws, and I can&#8217;t imagine anyone will be particularly convinced that he&#8217;s changed.- Analyst Joe Twyman on Boris Johnson<\/q><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><q>If the last eight years of craziness in British politics have told us anything it&#8217;s that nothing is impossible \u2014\u00a0but it has to be a unity candidate and [Johnson]\u00a0divided the party,<\/q>\u00a0said Twyman of Deltapoll\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><q>Many of the mistakes that led to him resigning in the first place are a result of his personality flaws, and I can&#8217;t imagine anyone will be particularly convinced that he&#8217;s changed<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tory troubles trace back to Brexit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Much of the Conservative Party&#8217;s\u00a0current troubles can be traced back to the fallout from former prime minister David Cameron&#8217;s decision to hold a vote on exiting the European Union in 2016<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The\u00a0<q>Brexit<\/q>\u00a0forces scored a surprising 52 per cent\u00a0to 48 per cent victory, but it turned out to be a pyrrhic win, says Haddon, the political analyst<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><q>I think definitely this is a ripple effect of Brexit.\u00a0It did huge damage to the Conservative Party in terms of opening up very raw wounds of different camps within the party,<\/q>\u00a0she told CBC News in an interview<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><q>They had basically the opportunity to find whatever solution to Brexit they could all rally around, but nobody wanted to compromise, nobody wanted to give up the battle<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">In Sunak&#8217;s recent leadership campaign, he shunned the traditional Tory tax-cutting agenda,\u00a0arguing it would exacerbate the financial hurt faced by Britons. Truss,\u00a0on the other hand,\u00a0embraced it \u2014 and subsequently paid the price<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">So does that leave the Conservatives irreparably divided? Perhaps, says\u00a0Twyman<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><q>What has proved successful in the past is that they can unite behind\u00a0a leader who can win \u2014\u00a0that has been the overarching philosophy of the Conservative Party for hundreds of years.\u00a0I do not see a candidate at the moment who can win<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The insults, the infighting and the dysfunction might simply be brushed off as political theatre, except that the impact on Britain&#8217;s international reputation has been hugely hurtful,\u00a0says Haddon<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><q>The last six years and the many, many farcical scenes, moments of chaos, they&#8217;ve all been the same.\u00a0And people are probably shrugging their shoulders and saying, &#8216;here we go again&#8217;\u00a0<\/q><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Could Liz Truss&#8217;s resignation as PM mean the return of Boris Johnson?
