Little Black Devils \u2014 From Juno to Putot looks at the wartime experience of Jim Parks and his brother<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jim Parks still vividly remembers the day he and his platoon stormed\u00a0the beaches of Normandy\u00a0more than 70 years ago<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parks, a member of the Winnipeg Rifles,\u00a0was among the first wave of Canadian soldiers\u00a0to land at Juno Beach on June 6, 1944,\u00a0two minutes before the main assault wave hit. His boat was struck\u00a0by the Germans as heavy machine guns fired on them,\u00a0forcing him\u00a0to jump in the water<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had to sort of swim in,<\/q>\u00a0he said, remembering looking back and seeing a fellow soldier\u00a0still in the water<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We don’t know [if]\u00a0they’re alive or dead,<\/q>\u00a0Parks recalled<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parks, 98, who now lives in Mount Albert, Ont., about 67 kilometres north of Toronto, lied about his age to join the army, claiming to be 18 when he was actually 15. He joined up\u00a0after his brother Jack Parks persuaded\u00a0him to enlist. Both brothers stormed Juno Beach on D-Day, although they weren’t on the same landing craft. And both made it out alive<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u00a0were among roughly\u00a014,000 Canadians who landed at Juno Beach on D-Day, joining the more than 150,000 allied troops who fought their way ashore on\u00a0five beaches in\u00a0Normandy that day. Some 359 Canadian soldiers died on D-Day,\u00a0according to an account of the battle on the Veterans Affairs website\u00a0(new window)<\/a>, and more than 800 were wounded<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new documentary film titled\u00a0Little Black Devils \u2014 From Juno to Putot<\/em>, that is being shot in France, will include both Parks brothers. Parks said Little Black Devils\u00a0was the name\u00a0given to their team<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2011, the film’s creator Frederick Jeanne met Parks in Winnipeg. Parks\u00a0helped him write a book on the Royal Winnipeg Rifles called\u00a0Hold the Oak Line<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were very close to death but they managed to escape\u00a0the Second World War untouched,<\/q>\u00a0Jeanne said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jim was a special witness … He saw many things<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The five-part documentary film is set to come out\u00a0in 2024, Jeanne says<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parks credits his crystal-clear memory in part to being so young\u00a0at the time of the war<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was just in the impressionable age when you’re a teenager,<\/q>\u00a0he said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything that you get there is locked in \u2026 People remember a lot of things about their high school<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rob Cullen, whose dad Gilbert Cullen was a gunner in the Canadian\u00a0Army’s 12th\u00a0Field Regiment, met Parks roughly a decade ago at a Remembrance Day ceremony<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My dad landed right behind Jim with the artillery and I spoke to Jim about it,<\/q>\u00a0Cullen told CBC Toront<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Jim said, ‘Yes, it’s absolutely true,’ and we just kind of blossomed from there as friends<\/q>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cullen’s father also survived the war and died\u00a0in 1980<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cullen and his wife travelled to Normandy\u00a0in June of this year<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has a ritual of going into the waters off Juno Beach on the anniversary of D-Day at the hour of the start of the attack. At 7:30 a.m. he walks\u00a0as far and as deep\u00a0as he can go while standing<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes\u00a0it’s warm and sometimes it’s freezing,<\/q>\u00a0Cullen said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I do a lot of thinking and I pay some respects to the guys who came ashore and the ones who didn’t make it. And I fill up the ocean a little bit with my tears and have my moment, and then I walk back in the same time that my dad landed<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While at the beach in the early hours, he noticed a group of four young men slowly approaching him. He was stunned\u00a0when\u00a0he spotted an emblem of the\u00a0Royal Winnipeg Rifles on their jackets<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We start talking and they’re asking what I’m doing there and they tell me, ‘We’re filming a movie here about the Royal Winnipeg Rifles.’\u00a0 And I said, ‘Well, I know one of those guys.\u00a0his name is Jim Parks’<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The one guy looks at me, he says ‘I’m playing Jim Parks in the movie.’\u00a0I’m getting goosebumps just talking about it,<\/q>\u00a0Cullen said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is nobody else on the whole beach. Me, my wife and these four guys. And I find the guy that’s playing Jim Parks in a movie that I never knew was being filmed. It was absolutely jaw-dropping<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cullen said it’s important stories\u00a0about soldiers like Parks\u00a0continue to be shared<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are losing so many veterans,<\/q>\u00a0he\u00a0said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You know, we say, ‘Lest we forget.’\u00a0Well, here’s this crew of guys over in Normandy working on a shoestring budget, putting together a motion picture about our soldiers and their sacrifice<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meantime, Parks says he still stays active. He drives to his local gym about three times a week to work out<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I get a swim about once a week, but most of the time it’s in the gym \u2026\u00a0it’s a lot of socializing,<\/q>\u00a0Parks said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just to keep out of mischief, really<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He says he hopes he can return for the opening\u00a0of the film in 2024<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think we said to Fred, ‘When you do the premiere over there, how about an invite’<\/q>\u00a0Parks said, laughing<\/p>\n\n\n\n
