CSIS says it has intelligence about hostile activities undermining Canadians’ security<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canada’s spy agency is actively investigating what it calls multiple\u00a0credible<\/q>\u00a0death threats from Iran aimed at individuals\u00a0in Canada, CBC News has learned<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service said it’s aware of state actors from the Islamic Republic of Iran monitoring and intimidating people inside Canada to silence those who speak out publicly against the regime<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CSIS is actively investigating several threats to life emanating from the Islamic Republic of Iran based on credible intelligence,<\/q>\u00a0CSIS spokesperson Eric Balsam said in a media statement to CBC News<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, these hostile activities and foreign interference undermine the security of Canada and Canadians, as well as our democratic values and sovereignty<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s the first time the agency has confirmed multiple ongoing investigations involving what it calls\u00a0lethal threats to Canadians and people located in Canada<\/q>\u00a0emanating from Iran<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The details were released to CBC News after Britain’s domestic intelligence chief revealed Wednesday that the United Kingdom\u00a0faces a major security threat from Iran,\u00a0Russia and China \u2014 countries the U.K. accuses of using\u00a0violence and intimidation abroad\u00a0to pursue their interests<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the past two months, demonstrators have taken to the streets in Iran to protest the regime. The massive demonstrations were triggered by\u00a0the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by the so-called morality police and died in custody after allegedly wearing her hijab improperly<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 326 people \u2014 including teenagers and children \u2014 have been killed in Iran’s protests, according to the Norway-based organization Iran Human Rights. Iranian authorities maintain strict control over such information, however, and the numbers could be even\u00a0higher<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MI5, the United Kingdom’s domestic counter-intelligence agency, said\u00a0Iran’s intelligence service is\u00a0targeting dissidents abroad\u00a0they\u00a0perceive\u00a0as enemies of the regime<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ken McCallum, director-general of MI5, said\u00a0Iran\u00a0is responsible for at\u00a0least 10 potential threats to kidnap or kill British or U.K.-based people this year<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran projects threat to the U.K. directly, through its aggressive intelligence services,<\/q>\u00a0said McCallum<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The foreign secretary made clear to the Iranian regime just last week that the U.K. will not tolerate intimidation or threats to life towards journalists, or any individual, living in the U.K<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canada’s government last year condemned Iran’s pattern of intimidation and foreign interference<\/q> after U.S. authorities laid charges in an alleged Iranian plot to kidnap five people and take them to Iran \u2014 including three individuals from Canada. (new window)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Family members in Canada who have criticized Iran’s government after losing their loved ones in the destruction of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 in 2020 have also reported to RCMP that they’ve been targeted for threats and intimidation by Tehran. Flight 752\u00a0was shot down by the\u00a0Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps\u00a0(IRGC) shortly after takeoff on\u00a0January 8, 2020, killing all 176 passengers and crew aboard<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CSIS said in its 2021\u00a0annual report that it continued to\u00a0investigate credible reports<\/q>\u00a0involving\u00a0threat actors linked to proxies of the Islamic Republic of Iran<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n

FAMILIES OF FLIGHT 752 VICTIMS REPORT THREATS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dennis Horak, Canada’s former charg\u00e9 d’affaires in Iran, said that kidnapping and killing people abroad has been part of the Iranian regime’s\u00a0playbook for decades. He said the latest threats are a reminder of the nature of the regime<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a regime that does not play by the rules internationally and never has,<\/q>\u00a0said Horak, who worked at Canada’s embassy in Tehran from 2009 until it closed in 2012<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the late 1980s to 1990s, multiple Iranian dissidents went missing or were killed abroad<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iranian agents murdered Sadegh Sharafkandi, the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran, in Berlin at a restaurant. The Germans prosecuted the case and issued\u00a0international arrest warrants in 1997 for top Iranian regime officials<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Horak said that\u00a0it was rare for MI5 to reveal the number of attempts, which could signal the agency’s level of concern<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Brits may feel that the Iranians have nothing to lose at this point in terms of their international limits, so they may step it up and go after some people who are making the biggest noise about what’s happening domestically,<\/q>\u00a0he said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CSIS said it cannot comment on specific cases on Canadian soil, but is working with domestic and international partners and\u00a0the Iranian-Canadian community<\/p>\n\n\n\n
