{"id":13515,"date":"2022-12-14T16:08:14","date_gmt":"2022-12-14T16:08:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambassadornews.org\/?p=13515"},"modified":"2022-12-14T16:08:19","modified_gmt":"2022-12-14T16:08:19","slug":"what-is-nuclear-fusion-and-why-is-it-such-a-big-deal%ef%bf%bc%ef%bf%bc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambassadornews.org\/en\/what-is-nuclear-fusion-and-why-is-it-such-a-big-deal%ef%bf%bc%ef%bf%bc\/","title":{"rendered":"What is nuclear fusion and why is it such a big deal\ufffc\ufffc"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Scientists and engineers have been working on trying to harness this form of energy for decades<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The U.S. Department of Energy on Tuesday announced a breakthrough in nuclear fusion, a method\u00a0of producing clean energy,\u00a0that has many people hopeful for the future<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The achievement was reached\u00a0by scientists at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.llnl.gov\/news\/national-ignition-facility-achieves-fusion-ignition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory\u00a0(new window)<\/a>\u00a0in California<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Nuclear fusion may be a new concept to many, but scientists have been working on it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/nuclear-fusion\/History-of-fusion-energy-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">since the 1940s\u00a0(new window)<\/a>. However, they have faced a tough challenge: how to produce more energy than it takes\u00a0to create it. It almost seemed like an insurmountable challenge<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Until today<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">?What is nuclear fusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Nuclear fusion is a process where two lighter elements combine to make a heavier element\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">It&#8217;s the same process that powers our sun, where protons of hydrogen atoms collide violently and at incredibly high temperatures at the core,\u00a0fusing\u00a0together to produce a helium atom<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Here on Earth, nuclear fusion is produced by fusing the elements\u00a0deuterium and tritium. Deuterium is quite plentiful and can be found in water, but is most abundant in our oceans.\u00a0Tritium, on the other hand, is less plentiful and is primarily found in our atmosphere, a result of cosmic radiation. Tritium is also made in nuclear explosions and is\u00a0a byproduct\u00a0from\u00a0nuclear reactors<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The sun&#8217;s massive gravitational force allows it to fuse\u00a0hydrogen\u00a0atoms,\u00a0but to create fusion on Earth, scientists need to apply\u00a0extremely high pressures and temperatures that are\u00a0roughly 100 million degrees Celsius, or 10 times hotter than the sun&#8217;s core<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">While there are different ways to try to produce nuclear fusion, scientists at the California lab used 192 lasers focused on the inner wall of a cylinder that contained a small capsule\u00a0(about the size of a BB) of fusion fuel:\u00a0deuterium and tritium\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">That generated X-rays from the wall that struck the capsule, squeezing the\u00a0fuel. It stayed hot, dense and round enough\u00a0for long enough\u00a0that it ignited, producing more energy than the lasers\u00a0used<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">On Dec. 5, 2022, a team at LLNL&#39;s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lasers_llnl?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@lasers_llnl<\/a> conducted the first controlled fusion experiment in history to achieve fusion ignition. Also known as scientific energy breakeven, the experiment produced more energy from fusion than the laser energy used to drive it. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/t9htICEcuh\">pic.twitter.com\/t9htICEcuh<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (@Livermore_Lab) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Livermore_Lab\/status\/1602679745287700483?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 13, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">While the energy produced was small \u2014 about three megajoules, or enough to power a light bulb \u2014 it marks a\u00a0historic first in nuclear fusion energy because the lasers used just over two megajoules to fire into the target<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">However, it&#8217;s important to note that 300 megajoules\u00a0of traditional energy \u2014 often\u00a0referred to as\u00a0<q>from the wall<\/q>\u00a0energy\u00a0\u2014\u00a0were needed to produce all the materials used in the experiment, according to\u00a0Marv Adams, deputy administrator for Defense Programs at the Nuclear Security and National Nuclear Security Administration<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">?How is it different from\u00a0nuclear power we already use<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">When most people think about nuclear energy, they likely think about the nuclear reactors we have today. But those reactors operate using nuclear fission\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Fission is the exact opposite of fusion, which forces atoms together. Instead,\u00a0nuclear reactors generate energy by separating\u00a0heavy atoms<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">As well, fusion produces clean energy. Unlike nuclear reactors, the process doesn&#8217;t result in byproducts\u00a0like\u00a0the spent rods found in nuclear power plants<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">With nuclear fusion, there is also no chance of a nuclear meltdown as there is with fission, and nuclear fusion cannot be used to make nuclear weapons<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The International Atomic Energy Agency explains that while hydrogen bombs do\u00a0use fusion reactions, a second fission bomb is needed to detonate it\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">?Why is nuclear fusion\u00a0important<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Earth is facing a climate crisis caused by centuries of burning fossil fuels. As a result, there will be an increase in floods, droughts, rising\u00a0sea levels and more. We are already seeing this happening, and the more the planet warms, the worse\u00a0these disasters will become<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The planet has warmed by roughly 1.2 C, but if we are to limit that to 1.5 C by the end of the century, which is the ambitious goal set at the 2015 Paris climate accord, it could mean fewer climate-related disasters. So, scientists and engineers have been trying to develop cost-effective, clean energy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BOB MCDONALD EXPLAINS NUCLEAR FUSION<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>22 hours agoDuration6:16The host of CBC&#8217;s Quirks &amp; Quarks explains the process of getting clean energy from nuclear fusion, and points to Canadian and French projects that are also underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">That&#8217;s where fusion comes in<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">It produces no harmful carbon dioxide or methane emissions and is highly efficient<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/newscenter\/news\/what-is-nuclear-fusion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Atomic Energy Agency\u00a0(new window)<\/a>,\u00a0<q>Fusion could generate four times more energy per kilogram of fuel than fission (used in nuclear power plants) and nearly four million times more energy than burning oil or coal<\/q>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><q>It moves us closer to the possibility of zero carbon abundant fusion energy powering our society,<\/q>\u00a0said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm at Tuesday&#8217;s announcement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">?When will we use fusion as an energy source<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">While this is an historic first, it doesn&#8217;t mean that we&#8217;re ready to produce energy on a large scale yet\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><q>There are very significant hurdles, not just in the science, but in technology,<\/q>\u00a0said Kim Budil, director of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><q>This is one igniting capsule, one time\u00a0and to realize commercial fusion energy, you have to \u2026\u00a0produce many, many fusion ignition events per minute and you have to have a robust system of drivers to enable that,<\/q>\u00a0said Budil<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">She\u00a0explained\u00a0that though it wouldn&#8217;t take quite as long as scientists used to estimate, it will\u00a0be\u00a0least a few decades before the underlying technologies are developed enough\u00a0to build a nuclear fusion power plant<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">It&#8217;s also important to remember that the U.S. isn&#8217;t the only country working on nuclear fusion\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">In France, there is the collaborative\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor\u00a0(new window)<\/a>, a massive nuclear fusion reactor weighing 23,000 tonnes and standing nearly 30 metres tall, which is set to begin operations in roughly a decade<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">In Canada, there are also private companies like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/generalfusion.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">General Fusion\u00a0(new window)<\/a>, based out of British Columbia, among others.
