{"id":13577,"date":"2022-12-16T09:49:32","date_gmt":"2022-12-16T09:49:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambassadornews.org\/?p=13577"},"modified":"2022-12-16T09:49:37","modified_gmt":"2022-12-16T09:49:37","slug":"dangerous-road-conditions-could-persist-following-messy-mix-of-winter-weather-opp-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambassadornews.org\/en\/dangerous-road-conditions-could-persist-following-messy-mix-of-winter-weather-opp-say\/","title":{"rendered":"Dangerous road conditions could persist following messy mix of winter weather, OPP say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">A winter storm walloped the Greater Toronto Area on Thursday, bringing a messy mix of rain, snow and freezing rain that caused slippery road conditions for many drivers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Environment Canada had initially warned that the storm could dump 10 to 15 centimetres of snow on the city but later revised its forecast down to five to 10 centimetres after many parts of Toronto got the bulk of the precipitation in rain and freezing rain instead<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u201cRemember, we&#8217;re right on that freezing mark so where you start and where you finish, you could have completely different driving conditions,\u201d OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said during an interview with CP24 late Thursday afternoon. \u201cThe roads have mostly been salted and are just wet. But there&#8217;s still a lot of snow accumulation on shoulders and some roads that are less travelled\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">A number of collisions were reported in areas where freezing rain warnings are in effect &#8212; including a 17-vehicle pileup on the Garden City Skyway in Niagara Region earlier in the day<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Schmidt said that while there had been \u201cplenty of fender benders\u201d throughout the day,\u201d few of them have resulted in serious injuries, at least so far<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">A winter weather travel advisory, however, remained in effect from Environment Canada for Toronto and most of southern Ontario on Thursday evening<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The \u201ccomplex\u201d system includes freezing rain, transitioning to snow as the temperature hovers around the freezing mark<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Snowfall and freezing rain warnings were in effect for many parts of the province, including some areas around Toronto. Environment Canada said York and Durham regions could still see as much as 15 to 20 centimetres of snow, while freezing rain warnings are in effect for Burlington, Oakville, Hamilton and Niagara<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&#8220;We are just right on the bubble there in terms of how traffic is going to manage in the overnight hours as it gets dark and as we are near the freezing mark,\u201d Schmidt said<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Snow was expected to taper off late Thursday evening<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DRIVERS URGED TO USE CAUTION<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Environment Canada warned people to be cautious of reduced invisibility due to snow or blowing snow. Southeasterly wind gusts near 70 km\/h are expected, with the strongest winds are expected near the shores of Lake Ontario<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u201cMotorists should expect hazardous winter driving conditions and adjust travel plans accordingly,\u201d the weather agency said. \u201cIf visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The statement said the weather could have a &#8220;significant impact&#8221; on rush-hour traffic<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cp24.com\/news\/some-gta-school-buses-cancelled-ahead-of-expected-storm-1.6195697\">A number of school boards around the GTA cancelled buses<\/a>\u00a0due to the expected storm, though most schools remained open<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The Toronto District school Board said that buses were running, but there may be some delays because of the weather<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">In a tweet on Thursday morning,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TPSOperations\/status\/1603361728594694145\">Toronto police urged people to use caution<\/a>\u00a0if venturing out<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u201cToronto is expecting winter weather &amp; strong winds today. Please use caution if you must venture outside, and be aware of blowing debris and power outages at signalized intersections,\u201d police said.\u00a0 \u201cSlow down and drive to the weather conditions. Stay safe, everyone\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Schmidt also advised people not to try and get out around plows on roads and highways<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u201cDon&#8217;t be trying to squeeze through them,\u201d he said. \u201cYou get involved with a collision with the plow, it shuts the whole plowing operation down. So give them space, let them do their job. They&#8217;re driving at the maximum speed that they can to lay down enough salt or brine to you know get rid of that ice\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TRANSIT, AIR TRAVEL IMPACTED<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The TTC said Thursday morning that it is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttc.ca\/riding-the-ttc\/Updates\/Service-changes-in-the-event-of-winter-weather\/Stops-out-of-service\">cancelling service to dozens of bus stops<\/a>\u00a0in spots where vehicles tend to get stuck in order to avoid vehicles stalling<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The TTC said in a statement Wednesday that it was preparing for the storm by adding extra staff and vehicles, readying shuttle buses in case Line 3 (Scarborough SRT) is impacted, and carrying out anti-icing for all vehicles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">GO Transit advised riders to plan ahead for the weather, to \u201cbe careful on train and bus platforms,\u201d and to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gotransit.com\/en\/trip-planning\/seeschedules?utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_campaign=SeeSchedules&amp;utm_content=NOCCommunications\">stay tuned to schedule updates<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Toronto Pearson warned travellers that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TorontoPearson\/status\/1603175988166172672\">weather \u201cmay impact operations\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and advised people to check their flight status before leaving for the airport<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The airport said that while the morning was mostly problem-free, the afternoon and evening might be different, as flight volume could be limited for safety reasons<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u201cWe might have to reduce the number of flights that are coming and going,\u201d Greater Toronto Airports Authority Spokesperson Tori Gass told CP24<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">She advised travellers to check with their airlines before leaving for the airport<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The city said that it began brining the roads early Thursday ahead of the storm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u201cWe actually started applying liquid brine last night throughout Etobicoke and North York and other parts of the city,\u201d Vince Sferrazza, Toronto\u2019s director of operations and maintenance, said. \u201cWe applied liquid brine to the expressways, to hills, bridges and high priority intersections. In addition to that, we also started what we refer to as spot salting where there has already been some areas of the city where ice is formulating, whether it be on the sidewalks and the roads\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">He said the city\u2019s plan this season will be to dispatch salting equipment to all roads as soon as there is snow sticking, as opposed to getting to all arterial roads first<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u201cPreviously in the old contracts, we would deploy the equipment on the expressways and arterials and we normally got to the local roads after we finished the arterial roads,\u201d Sferrazza said. \u201cNow as soon as the snow begins to stick, regardless of the road classification, we will send out the salters. In addition to that, our contractors have now started using different types of equipment\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">He said that includes some vehicles which can both plow and salt<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">He said the new equipment gives the city \u201cadditional flexibility\u201d in the cleanup effort on the roads<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">In terms of temperature, Toronto sat at 1 C Thursday afternoon.
