{"id":14576,"date":"2023-01-16T14:36:28","date_gmt":"2023-01-16T14:36:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambassadornews.org\/?p=14576"},"modified":"2023-01-16T14:36:34","modified_gmt":"2023-01-16T14:36:34","slug":"scheduled-surgeries-resume-at-torontos-sickkids-hospital-following-surge-in-respiratory-illnesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambassadornews.org\/en\/scheduled-surgeries-resume-at-torontos-sickkids-hospital-following-surge-in-respiratory-illnesses\/","title":{"rendered":"Scheduled surgeries resume at Toronto&#8217;s SickKids hospital following surge in respiratory illnesses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Canada\u2019s largest pediatric hospital will begin \u201ccautiously increasing capacity for scheduled surgical procedures\u201d today following a recent months-long surge in patients with respiratory illnesses<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Late last year, Toronto\u2019s SickKids hospital announced it had \u201cno choice but to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cp24.com\/news\/sickkids-to-limit-surgeries-in-attempt-to-preserve-critical-care-capacity-1.6149300\">reduce surgical activity<\/a>\u00a0for the time being\u201d in order to \u201cpreserve critical care capacity\u201d after its intensive care unit census hit more than 127 per cent capacity for several days and it saw an increase in the number of patients with higher acuity outside of the ICU<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">In a Nov. 11\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sickkids.ca\/en\/news\/archive\/2022\/sickkids-reduces-surgeries-to-preserve-critical-care-capacity\/\">statement<\/a>, the hospital indicated that more than 50 per cent of its ICU patients were on ventilators<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">As a result, six of SickKids\u2019 16 operating rooms were shut down so staff could be redeployed to overwhelmed critical care and pediatric medicine units and its emergency department<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The Hospital for Sick Children said this move allowed it to \u201cprioritize urgent, emergency and the most time-sensitive surgeries,\u201d including urgent endoscopy services and image-guided therapy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe now find ourselves supporting our colleagues virtually to care for paediatric patients who would otherwise receive care at SickKids,\u201d the hospital said at that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The decision to resume surgical procedures comes as the downtown hospital sees its \u201cpatient census stabilize and return to levels typically seen at this time of year,\u201d SickKids said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sickkids.ca\/en\/news\/archive\/2023\/sickkids-increasing-surgical-activity\/\">Jan. 15 release<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">More than 6,000 patients are currently waiting to have surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children. Families who are waiting for a surgery date will be contacted in the coming months to book their procedures<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Dr. Simon Kelley, the hospital\u2019s associate chief of perioperative services, clinical and ambulatory, said this time has been \u201csome of the most challenging months\u201d in the hospital&#8217;s history<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u201cThe extraordinary collaboration within the hospital and vital support of our partners across the system have allowed us to maintain emergent, urgent, and highly time-sensitive surgical services for our patients,\u201d he said in the statement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u201cDespite resource constraints and changes to surgical operations, we are proud to have completed over 11,200 surgeries in 2022 \u2013 more than 92 per cent of our pre-pandemic volumes\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Several hospitals across the province were forced to limit pediatric admissions as well as cancel surgeries in the fall due to the viral surge.
