‘The next day I was up cooking breakfast for my grandkids,’ says patient<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In what’s believed to be a first for Canadian health care, Todd Bene, a Calgary man who had chronic pain due to a damaged disc in his back, recently underwent\u00a0spinal surgery while awake<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next day I was up cooking breakfast for my grandkids and everything else<\/q>\u00a0he\u00a0saidIt was just night and day pain-wise<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bene\u00a0had a disectomy last month at the Foothills Medical Centre to remove the damaged part of a herniated disc in his spine \u2014\u00a0something he said had contributed to intense pain and impacted his life negatively<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But after about 50 minutes in the operation room \u2014 the approximate length of the procedure \u2014\u00a0it all came to an end<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a traditional case, a patient would be under anesthetics\u00a0and\u00a0intubated with a breathing tube<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Bene’s case, it was different. He was awake, even sitting on the table for part of the procedure.\u00a0He was given a sedative, a local anesthetic instead of a general one, and was communicating with the doctors,\u00a0including Dr. Michael Yang, who led the operation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biggest benefit of doing [awake] spine surgery is that patients recover from their spine surgery much faster<\/q>\u00a0Yang said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s because the patient have less pain after surgery, less nausea, less vomiting after surgery \u2026 also without general anesthetic it causes less stress on the heart and lungs so that there’s less risk of developing complications during the operation<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yang explained that Bene had a previous heart attack,\u00a0heart failure and that\u00a0he also has coronary artery disease. So performing the surgery under general anesthetic posed a risk, Yang said,\u00a0because it can\u00a0induce\u00a0a lot of stress in a patient and can lead to heart complications<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yang became familiar with the innovative practice during his fellowship at the University of Miami, where such\u00a0operations of this were a lot more common<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that while the surgery itself was\u00a0minimally invasive<\/q>\u00a0it was not necessarily groundbreaking in a procedural sense<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the process and teamwork, and what it means for the future of health care and technology in Calgary, was<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We do a lot of minimally invasive surgery\u00a0in Calgary, but it’s the collaboration between neuro-anesthesia and the whole\u00a0team to be able to do it awake \u2014 that was innovation<\/q>\u00a0Yang said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having said that, we want to do more awake surgery in Calgary and we want to do more complex surgery awake in Calgary. So this is the first step in the grand plan of being able to do these<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yang\u00a0says the team\u00a0plans to perform more procedures, and hopes to expand\u00a0to some other types of spinal surgeries, in an effort to create\u00a0faster timelines that could ease the pressure on the health-care system in the province<\/p>\n\n\n\n
