Liberals announce $650M more in military aid for Ukraine, spread over several years<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered an impassioned speech to parliamentarians Friday\u00a0calling on Canada and other western allies to stick by his country through the long, bloody road to victory<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He addressed a joint meeting of the Canadian Parliament Friday following meetings in\u00a0the United States, where he appealed for more weapons and rebuked Russia before the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Life and justice must prevail<\/q>\u00a0Zelenskyy\u00a0told the House of Commons in a speech that received at least a dozen standing ovations<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When we call on the world to support us, it is not just about an ordinary conflict. It is about saving the lives of millions of people. Literally physical salvation, ordinary women and men, children, our families, whole communities, entire cities.\u00a0Russia’s destruction of Mariupol or Bakhmut or any other city\u00a0must not go unpunished<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n
As\u00a0Ukrainian refugees looked on from the gallery,\u00a0Zelenskyy\u00a0thanked Canada for its continued support\u00a0dating back to 1983, when the\u00a0first\u00a0monument\u00a0in the world to honour the victims of the Holodomor \u2014 the Soviet-engineered famine that killed\u00a0millions of Ukrainians in the 1930s.\u00a0\u2014 was unveiled in the\u00a0city of Edmonton<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ZELENSKYY THANKS CANADA, SAYS UKRAINE MUST PREVAIL AGAINST RUSSIA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Canada for its support in an address to parliamentarians Friday, saying justice must prevail and the war with Russia ‘must end’ with his country’s victory<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Moscow now, as always, is bent on controlling Ukraine and makes use of all available means to do that, including genocide<\/q>\u00a0Zelenskyy\u00a0said<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ukraine, not genocide, will be victorious in this war.\u00a0People will be the winners, not the Kremlin<\/q><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Friday another\u00a0$650 million in military aid for Ukraine,\u00a0spread over three years,\u00a0to acquire 50 armoured vehicles. The fleet\u00a0will include medical evacuation vehicles to\u00a0be built in London, Ont., he said<\/p>\n\n\n\n
History will judge us on how we defend democratic values, and Ukraine is at the tip of the spear in this great challenge of the 21st century<\/q>\u00a0Trudeau told the House before introducing Zelenskyy<\/p>\n\n\n\n
[Russian President Vladimir Putin] \u00a0governs with deception, violence and repression<\/q>\u00a0he said<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But his imperial delusions in Ukraine have been met with a fierce defence. While the Biden administration in the United States remains firmly behind Ukraine, the notion of continued, open-ended\u00a0support for the embattled Eastern European country\u00a0is dividing the Republican Party<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There has been no hint of any such\u00a0political divide in Canada. Conservative Leader Pierre Pollievre\u00a0gave a thumbs-up to the Ukraine delegation when it arrived outside the House of Commons\u00a0chamber and Zelenskyy was formally greeted by political leaders<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Saskatchewan Sen. Denise Batters, who is of Ukrainian descent, attended the event wearing a vyshyvanka, a traditional Ukrainian\u00a0embroidered blouse. She told Zelenskyy her grandmother stitched the garment\u00a0more than 100 years ago before coming to Canada<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Separately, Ukraine’s new Defence Minister\u00a0Rustem Umerov met with his Canadian counterpart, Bill Blair, at National Defence headquarters. Blair\u00a0said\u00a0the government has had\u00a0outstanding<\/q>\u00a0discussions with Ukraine about how Canada can help with its\u00a0valiant and\u00a0courageous\u00a0struggle<\/q>\u00a0against Russia<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We believe it is our responsibility and we are absolutely resolved to providing all of the assistance and support that we can for Ukraine<\/q>\u00a0Blair said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visit comes as Ukraine reports battlefield progress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The visit happened just as reports emerged that Ukrainian forces\u00a0operating near Orikhiv\u00a0have penetrated the third line of Russian defences in the south of the country<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War, which has been following the invasion with daily reports and analysis,\u00a0hesitated\u00a0to call it a breakthrough. It\u00a0noted that geolocated\u00a0footage posted online Thursday\u00a0indicates that Ukrainian armoured vehicles advanced south of the Russian anti-tank ditches and dragon’s teeth obstacles<\/q>\u00a0that form part of Russia’s three defensive lines<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Ukrainian ability to bring armoured vehicles to and through the most formidable Russian defences intended to stop them, and to operate these vehicles near prepared Russian defensive positions, are important signs of progress in the Ukrainian counteroffensive<\/q>\u00a0the institute said in its nightly analysis<\/p>\n\n\n\n
UKRAINIANS IN CANADA EAGERLY AWAIT ZELENSKYY’S VISIT<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
A group of Ukrainians in Canada are excited to see their president pay a visit to the country. Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to make an in-person appeal for more military support in Ukraine’s fight against Russia<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Paul Grod, president of the World Ukrainian Congress, said for Ukrainians it’s not about liberating territory as much as it is\u00a0about freeing\u00a0people from Russian occupation<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also on Friday, a\u00a0Ukrainian\u00a0missile\u00a0struck the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol, the major city in occupied Crimea. The attack left one serviceman unaccounted for and the building that controls Russian naval operations in ruins<\/p>\n\n\n\n
