Quebec\u2019s Green Party leader posted a series of controversial tweets Friday and Saturday calling on Western countries and the Ukranian government to accept certain Russian demands related to the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alex Tyrrell said Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s demands for the denuclearization, \u201cdemilitarization\u201d and \u201cdenazification\u201d of Ukraine are \u201creasonable,\u201d calling on Western governments to stop sending weapons to the country and opt for negotiations instead<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI therefore call on the Canadian, American and NATO governments to stop sending arms to Ukraine and to support serious negotiations with Russia now to allow for an immediate deescalation and to save lives,\u201d he wrote on Twitter Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tyrrell\u2019s tweets were met with swift criticism, with Member of the National Assembly Benoit Charette suggesting he apologize to Ukrainian and Jewish communities for his statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe only thing to do in the circumstances is to recognize it and apologize, especially to Ukrainians and Jews here and elsewhere,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putin has cited the \u201cdenazification\u201d of Ukraine as one justification for the invasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement to CTV News, Tyrrell referred to the Azov battalion<\/a>, a nationalist, far-right voluntary military unit that was incorporated into the Ukrane National Guard in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a major problem,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Political scientists like Ivan Katchanovski<\/a> point out that Ukraine has a Jewish president, Volodymyr Zelensky, who won the election with over 70 per cent of the vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Katchanovski told The Canadian Press that Zelensky and his government \u201care not Nazis or neo-Nazis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tyrrell was further criticized after he wrote a Tweet linking a website which Twitter flagged as being \u201cRussia state-affiliated.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The link in question was an article covering a temporary ceasefire that would allow citizens to evacuate cities under attack. That ceasefire failed shortly after it was declared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tyrrell said that regardless of the information\u2019s origins, the contents of the article \u201cwere factual.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt should not be a thought crime to read Russian media in order to better understand the opposing point of view,\u201d he said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Green Party of Canada distanced itself from Tyrrell\u2019s statements, saying the federal Green Party is distinct from the Quebec party and said Tyrrell\u2019s remarks are not reflective of the federal party\u2019s views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlex Tyrrell holds no official position with the Green Party of Canada and does not speak for GPC,\u201d interim party leader Amita Kuttner tweeted. \u201cHis views on the war in Ukraine are abhorrent. Russia is the aggressor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked about this statement, Tyrrell said pacifism is a \u201ccore value\u201d of the party and referenced Kuttner\u2019s own opposition to sending weapons to Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I support their position on this,” he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Quebec Green Party won 1.68 per cent of votes in the 2018 provincial election.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tyrrell took to Twitter again Saturday morning, stressing that he was \u201cspeaking out for peace\u201d to avoid further violence in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
