Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall has officially resigned from the House of Commons, becoming the 10th MP to leave Parliament in 2026, in a development that highlights the rapid changes taking place within its ranks.
Wagantall announced last June that she would resign at the end of August, without disclosing the reason for her decision. She had originally planned to complete her parliamentary term. Wagantall had represented the Yorkton–Melville riding in Saskatchewan since 2015.
Her resignation follows the departures of former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault and former New Democratic Party MP Alexandre Boulerice from the House of Commons. Conservative MP Larry Brock of Ontario is also expected to resign later this month.
The House of Commons is scheduled to resume sitting on September 21, following recent federal by-elections that saw three new Liberal MPs elected to fill seats left vacant by the resignations of former MPs.
The series of departures is ushering in a new period of change within Canada’s Parliament as MPs prepare to return for the fall sitting.
